For this post, my 7th grade class has researched articles that feature new and old technologies used to prevent, or reduce earthquake damage to buildings. This research helps provide them background information before they begin creating their own earthquake resistant buildings.
Old Technologies
- 2,500 year old wood joints used in China
- Wide at the bottom & narrow at the top
Retrofit Older Buildings
Recent Technologies
- Anchor homes and other buildings to foundations, and strap/attach additional levels to one another
- Ductile Materials (Ability To Bend To Withstand Deformations)
- Steel Reinforced Concrete
- Base Isolation & Tuned Mass Dampeners
- 728 Ton Mass Dampener
- Shock Absorbers & Rubber Bearings
New Technologies
- Japanese Building Anchored By Giant Curtain Of Thermoplastic Carbon Fiber Composite
- Levitating Foundation (Building Floats On A Cushion Of Air)
- Core Wall
- Round Shape
