Students write an argumentative essay, using evidence and reasoning to support their claim that GMO’s are either beneficial (good), or detrimental (bad). To give students a jump start, I provide a number of articles for their review. I particularly like the articles from Mother Nature Network, as they describe some genetically modified organisms that are unique, and as such capture the interest of students. Moreover, students need to find articles with a connecting theme. The same articles I described provide a foundation for doing just that. There are articles that focus on medicinal uses, or that involve farm animals, or that involve plants for controlling pollution, or glow-in-the-dark animals. Any of these would be the beginning of a consistent theme.
