With the energy card sort, students use a worksheet and several cards, from UNC: School of Education, to learn about the thinking process that scientists use to categorize objects by their similar traits. I like using this group activity, because students can work through this together in teams of four. As they initially begin to sort the cards, students find that many teams identify several of the types and forms of energy, that will be the ones that they ultimately learn about in the last round of the card sort. They also see that few teams, if any, come up with all of the types and forms of energy, by themselves. In this way, they recognize that it is important to collaborate with many scientists with diverse backgrounds.
